Online programs are subject to the same differences in tuition as residential students. According to U.S. News, the average in-state tuition cost per credit hour in 2022-2023 for 182 colleges who provided that data was $330. The average out-of-state tuition cost at these schools is $472 per credit.

According to U.S. News, the average cost per credit for a private online school ranges between $145 and $1163 in the 164 schools that provided this information.
